In a tragic incident that has sparked concern over construction site safety in Lagos State, the Lagos State Government has sealed a construction site located in Lekki Phase 1 following a fatal crane accident. The accident, which occurred on July 9, 2025, resulted in the death of a crane operator identified as Rotimi Adesina.
According to eyewitnesses, the crane collapsed during routine operations, fatally injuring Adesina and causing panic in the surrounding area. Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but efforts to save the operator were unsuccessful. The exact cause of the crane failure is still under investigation.
In response to the incident, officials from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and other regulatory bodies swiftly moved to seal the premises, as seen in photos showing the site cordoned off with the seal date clearly marked. The government emphasized that the shutdown is a precautionary and investigative measure to ensure the safety of workers and residents in the area.
“We will not tolerate any form of negligence or safety breach on construction sites across the state,” a spokesperson for the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development stated. “The safety of lives must always come first.”
This tragedy adds to a growing list of construction-related accidents in Lagos, raising calls for stricter enforcement of safety standards, regular inspection of heavy-duty machinery, and the training and certification of operators.
Friends and family of the late Rotimi Adesina have expressed deep sorrow over the incident, remembering him as a dedicated and hardworking individual.
